Bike Polo

Although the grass version of Bike Polo dates back to the 1890s and even competed as an Olympic Sport in the early 20th century, Hard Court Bike Polo began in the 1990s in Seattle. What started as a way for bike messengers to pass the time between runs soon morphed into a worldwide sport played on every continent except Antarctica.

Birmingham Bike Polo began in 2021 and can be found playing at Fountain Heights Community Complex every Sunday afternoon and Tuesday evenings. Using their own materials and labor, the club renovated the abandoned tennis courts and have hosted several regional tournaments, league nights, and community events. As of 2024, Athletic Alabama and Birmingham Bike Polo are partnering with the Parks and Recreation Department to build a new multi-use and multi-sport court for the Fountain Heights Community.

All ages are welcome to come play. Equipment and bikes provided.

Tall Bike Joust

Birmingham’s Tall Bike Joust started in the early 2010s as a fun way for Redemptive Cycles to raise awareness for Birmingham’s only non-profit community bike cooperative. The event grew over the years and became the Redemptive’s most popular and anticipated event of the year, drawing hundreds of spectators and participants.

Athletic Alabama has since partnered with our friends at Redemptive Cycles to take over the crowd pleasing event! The bikes and “lances” are provided—all you have to bring is a sense of adventure and a friendly sense of competition!
